OXFORD BROOKES VIRTUAL REALITY TOUR
Oxford Brookes University tasked Fourth Reality, in conjunction with Better Reach, to create a virtual reality app to tour their campus for mobile phones using Google Cardboard. Oxford Brookes gave away free branded Google Cardboard headsets at various opens days and invited students to download the app and give it a go. The response was fantastic and generated a real buzz with the students. The app would allow visiting students the ability to explore the campus at their leisure when they get home.
The app became the first virtual reality tour of a university in the UK.
Better Reach managing director Stuart Edmonstone said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for universities to interact with interested students from across the world. Viewers can immerse themselves in a 3D tour of the facilities, experiencing the location as if they were visiting in person.
“It’s also an ideal way for any business to show that they’re leading the way in offering the latest innovative digital technologies to customers.”
Professor Anne-Marie Kilday, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Oxford Brookes University said: “For prospective students, there is a lot to see and information to take in at Open Days. Our VR Tour app and the headset, which students will be able to take away with them, will allow people to revisit the campus when they are back at home in a truly immersive virtual experience.
“Using this innovative technology will also allow us to reach out to those students who live further away, or who are unable to attend open days at the University.”
